First witness of road kill.

Dear Family and Friends,

Okay, let's just get this horrifying story out of the way.  So we're driving home one night, it's pretty late, we're on the backroads because it's saves us miles and we're winding in and out and all of a sudden a bunny come hopping out into the road on the other lane, a car comes up over the hill and.... yep, dead bunny, right in front of our very eyes, you know for how much road kill is here, I have never actually seen it happen, it was horrible!  Luckily that bunny is in a better place but it really shook up Sister Sume, haha, she loves those little guys.  Anyway, it's kind of sort of funny, not really but I sort of thought so.  The good news is that you really are just supposed to hit whatever is in front of you because if that car had swerved at all it would've hit us head on, so moral of the story, just hit the bunnies, they'll be in a better place.

We have gotten a few new investigators this week!  Which is wonderful, one of which is our neighbor and she is wonderful.  And also, we have this other neighbor from Germany and every time we walk out on our back deck he's there studying away, he goes to University of Tennessee (UT) I can't say "UT" because then it just looks like Utah, haha.  But he's really great, we've introduced ourselves to everyone and now everyone says hi to us it's great!  It's all about getting out there and sharing the good news.

Well we are still in a trio here, Sister Roundy, Sister Sume and I.  This trio has been such a blessing, Sister Roundy has just come in and lifted us up and given us the hope we needed to really and truly build up this area, she's so diligent it's inspiring.  We have seen a lot of success this week, we have a baptism in a couple of weeks, this wonderful lady whose husband grew up in the church, but went inactive, he's back now and they have two adorable kids.  I'm so excited for them and that we get to witness a family on the path to being together forever.  We also had the most incredible lesson on the Book of Mormon from a lady in the ward and I just wanted to share her conversion story---

She was 16 years old living here in Tennessee, her father was a Baptist preacher, and they do NOT like Mormons.  She was given a Book of Mormon by a friend at school but just sort of pushed it aside for awhile.  She finally felt like she really needed to read it, she loved her Baptist church and didn't want to go against her family but she knew she needed to ask if it was true, because something was pulling her towards the church.  She read and got down on her knees one night and asked if it was true, she just knew it was, but then she fought it for awhile, fearing what her family would think of her.  So then she had a series of three dreams, the first was her father's funeral she saw him in his casket with his bible in his hands and there were tons and tons of people at his funeral from the Baptist church he preached at.  The next dream was her mother's funeral, she also had her bible in her hands and there were tons of people from the Baptist church at her funeral.  The third dream was her own funeral and in her hands was the Book of Mormon and there was no one at her funeral.  She prayed about these dreams and knew she was going to have to stand alone.  She finally sat her parents down after meeting with missionaries behind their back to ask for permission to join the church, her father said she has a choice, she can join the church but she will not live under his roof.   She joined the church was disowned by her family and went to live with the current bishop and his family. Years and years went by she got married in the temple and had three children, her mother passed away and her father got very ill and she was the only one close enough to take care of him, so he came and lived in their Mormon home.  It was then that he first saw that we were Christian and that they talked about Christ and loved him, had pictures of him and were just trying everyday to be more like him, he started to soften and to feel the spirit, till he died he didn't deny his faith which he held dear in the Baptist church but he told her that he was sorry and the last two people he saw on earth were two Mormon missionaries singing Silent Night to him as he took his last breath.  She has high hopes for her dad when she can do his work in the temple in December.

I'm reminded of a quote by President Thomas S. Monson

"May we ever be courageous and prepared to stand for what we believe, and if we must stand alone in the process, may we do so courageously, strengthened by the knowledge that in reality we are never alone when we stand with our Father in Heaven."

She knew is was true and she stayed true to that testimony her whole life, I think about those who have gone before me, my ancestors and those who always stood true to what they believed, it is not always easy, but it is worth it.  I am so grateful for the gospel and for what those who have gone before me did so that I could be blessed with the knowledge of the truth that I have.  I will be forever grateful to my Mom and my Dad who always stayed true to the gospel throughout my life and raised me up to know who Christ is and that I have a Heavenly Father who loves me and cares about me and my life.  I know he lives, I know he loves us.  We are never alone, and everyone needs to know that they too, are never alone.

I hope you all have a wonderful week, thank you for your prayers and support!

Love,
Sister Burningham.

Transfer Week!!!

So transfer calls came... we are getting Pink Washed! which means that sister missionaries are replacing both of us in the Thousand Oaks 4th ward, I know one of the sisters. Her name is Sister Woods and she was in my MTC district. Elder Wilson is going to Arroyo Grande. I am going to the Camarillo 2nd ward and my new companion is Elder Martin.
This week was a really good one, we got a lot of stuff done.
Monday was Elder Wilson's Birthday and we had lots of fun.
     Tuesday
We had a lesson with Jenna Sheppard and took Robby with us. We resolved her concerns about the trinity and helped her understand why reading the Book Of Mormon can help her.
     Wednesday
We saw Charles, had a good gospel discussion and gained a lot of trust with him. We also had a lesson with Lito, he told us that he would already have been baptized but his only fear is how he is going to transition his family that lives in the Philippines from one christian church to ours. He is moving to the 1st ward boundaries so those Elders will continue to work with him.
     Thursday
We did service for Charles and his wife, we helped them move furniture around their house. Afterwards he offered to take us out to dinner this week.
     Friday
We had a lesson with the Vudmaska family and read the Book Of Mormon with them.
     Saturday
We saw Puru and Pretti in the morning and showed them Mormon.org and how to use it. Charles and his wife Helga took us to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner. It was really good they are progressing well but they are going out of town and won't be back until July.
     Sunday
We saw Sister Micheal and we talked about having faith when things get hard and having a good attitude instead of the "Wo is me," attitude. She is very firm and a great support to her whole family as a grandmother and mother.

This week!

This week was excellent! Here is a quick summary of it.
     Tuesday
Elder Spencer is an awesome missionary, we got along great and got some great stuff done. We spent the day visiting potential investigators but no one was really home. But later that night we taught their investigators David and Brennan whom I have met before. We taught them about the Word of Wisdom and the law of Chastity. It went very well, the spirit was there and they committed to follow those commandments.
     Wednesday
We had a lesson with Manny and took Robbie with us. He did a good job of leading the conversation to the message of the Restoration which we were then able to teach Manny. We gave him a BOM and invited him to church. We also saw John and Mary and were able to give them a good message. We had dinner with the Olsen's who also invited Debbie and Jack Robinson. It was Debbie's birthday so we sang to her and presented a gospel message.
     Thursday
We went to see Tracy a potential investigator but she wasn't home her daughter Katie was. She was making Guacamole and offered us some. Of course we took her up on the offer! We also talked about gospel related things and had a good lesson. We also saw Brother Parra who can't come to church because of his spouse but he is faithful in reading the scriptures and praying. He is doing better health wise from the last time I saw him. We also ran into Brother Teel and his cousin Alex who were going to play a game of Billiards in the club house and invited us. We accepted and played with them as we taught Alex and got to know Bro Teel's background a little better.
     Friday
This day is officially awkward Dec day. We first went to see Joan, She had the TV on and we kinda talked with her and prayed but it wasn't focused. Later that night we declared to a couple who were clearly flirting and the girl gave us a look like "cant you see I'm busy?" Then we drove past this guy who was standing by a wall by himself. We parked and went to talk to him, his name was Luke. He told us this was his hang out spot with his friends "The Wall" soon there were 10 other young people that showed up smoking/drinking. He told us all about how he toured Canada in a band. some of the kids looked over and said "whats with the J-dubs" (slang for Jehovah's Witness missionaries) When we left they all said bye to us.
     Saturday
We went on a Blitz with the 2nd ward. I went with Elder Fagen and we taught a good lesson to Bob a potential investigator and set a return appointment. Then we saw Bro Alden with Elder Spencer, my companion and gave him a message.
     Sunday
We had Charles and Helga Litchde come to sacrament meeting, they are from Switzerland and Germany. They loved the meeting! Then we did some street contacting and met a lot of people that were out and about. We called our Moms and said happy mothers day. There is a really good mothers day video. the link is Motherhood.mormon.org After dinner we went to see Lito. We haven't seen him in a while but he is doing good, he will be moving next week to a new care facility to work at. That is in the 2nd ward so he will continue to learn from the missionaries their.
Today is my companions birth day! so we are going to have lots of fun!

Last week!
Elder Bostrom my previous zone leader just got to Thousand Oaks and has come to say hi to us right now! It is great to see him again!
Anyway this week was a great one, here is a summary of it:
Monday We went to the mall with the 1st ward Elders. We found a place where they sell expensive ties for very cheap! Elder shields got Captain America socks and I got some awesome Batman ones for P-day! met with the Burneo family and took Caleb, a priest. Brandon and Caleb went off talking about Dragon ball Z and I got lost really fast!
Tuesday
We took Marcus to see Joan. She let us in, we had a lesson and helped her organize her stuff. We set up a time to help her more next week.
Wednesday
We took John to do service for Fern, a friend of Sister Mayhou. The night before at 10 Fern called and asked for help, but took 20 minutes to ask! She just kept talking in circles until we could get what she was trying to ask us. We also took John to a lesson with Madelene and she didn't like him too much. She felt that she wasn't able to speak her mind.
FridayWe had President interviews, I learned a lot of good things from the assistants about effective study. I also learned a lot about personal accountability and integrity. That night we had a lesson with Puru and Preeti, we taught them the plan of salvation. They are doing very good, they are praying daily and reading the Book of Mormon!
Saturday
We dropped by Joe and had a short lesson with him. We also saw sister Micheal and taught her about tithing. Today was supposed to be Madelene's baptism but on thursday she called and told us that she was feeling sick because of stress and her diabetes. We went by the Hoods who are a part member family. They have 4 little girls that are all crazy but lots of fun! Their daughter Kaiya is 7 and we would like to start teaching her soon.
Sunday
We went to see Kirk, we showed up right when he needed help moving a trampoline from his car to his back yard. So we helped him, talked for a while and tried to get him more involved in learning about the gospel. We dropped by Jenna Shepard, discussed her questions and set us an appointment.

Ripped Pants.

Hey Everybody,
Okay so the best thing happened last night after I skyped the family and we were finishing dinner.  We were all in the living room and Elder Sinks was catching one of the members in our ward from falling to the ground and when he bent down all the way he ripped his pants ALL THE WAY DOWN, I'm not kidding you it was the funniest thing, he just stood there forever not knowing what to do, he just laughed nervously and went to get his suit jacket to put around his waist to hide it.  Oh, I just had to tell you about that one, luckily he has a couple more suits so he'll be okay.
It has been a week. As for our area let me give you a few updates!  We have a part member family we are working with and the mom is not a member, she is getting baptized may 31st!  The kids aren't old enough to be baptized but they will be sealed to their kids and to each other in a year, so that's pretty exciting, I love attending baptisms and taking our investigators to them as well so they can feel the spirit that is there and desire that for themselves.  We are working on getting to know the area and ward members better, it's a work in progress because this is huge ward, but we'll get to know everyone someday!  We have a new companion, so now we are in a trio her name is Sister Roundy she is from Provo, Utah, yes yes I know another companion from Utah, it will make for easier reunions when we get home though, so that's exciting!  We are loving it though, we are already teaching in unity and this week we are really hoping to get some things going.
I feel like each day I'm out here I learn so much and it's hard to put it all into words but this week I was really thinking about being grateful in our circumstances no matter what they may be.  Whether we are on a mission, at home and going to work/school, newly married, raising teenagers, or empty nesters, at each stage of life and no matter what is going on we can be grateful.  Reading President Uchtdorf's talk has really helped me to understand this.  There is always something to be grateful for, but because we are sons and daughters of God with the potential to become like him we should always strive for happiness and joy in our lives, regardless of what's going on.
He says:
"In grief, we can still lift up our hearts in praise.  In pain, we can glory in Christ's Atonement.  In the cold of bitter sorrow, we can experience the closeness and warmth of Heaven's embrace." -Dieter F. Uchtdorf.
This has made me think of countless times in my life where when nothing else was constant, the Gospel was and is!  It is always constant, it never changes, and Heavenly Father never changes.  Happiness is living the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  I just don't think I ever really understood what submitting to His will and being happy in my circumstances could do but I am happy, I am excited for good things to come, I am hopeful, even though many times on my mission I have felt discouraged and bitter about circumstances, but that is not the way He intended it to be.  An eternal perspective is so critical to our happiness here in this world of shifting values and confusion, so this week I'm going to choose to be happy, being sad all the time is way more exhausting anyway.
I love you all, thank you for the love and support I hope your week is so happy, find the joy in every circumstance, there is always a new day and a better tomorrow.
Love,
Sister Burningham.

We just tried to take a cool picture that may be on an album cover or something because we're starting a band, after one of us learns how to play the guitar...

Hello everyone! how are you all doing?? I hope you are doing as good as I am... because I'm doing AWESOME!!! So this last week there was a lot of fun things that happened as you can imagine ha ha ha there is always fun things going on in my life!!  But man it has been a tiring week!  So I will get on with the usual story telling time!

So this week we were talking to one of our Recent converts and he is going through some rough times and we are helping him figure his life out. So we were over at his house and he told us that his cousin was stealing all of his money and making him pay a crazy amount of money for rent!  So he told us that he didn't have the money and so we were like... well just don't pay her and move out and you can go stay with this one other guy in the ward! and that is what he did!!!  This awesome African Member took him in and is letting him live with him!! Man it is so cool to see how the church is really like one big family out here!!  Everyone looks out for one another!  But it all didn't happen just that easy, there was a lot of behind the scenes drama to go with it!!!  So ya that is what a lot of missionary work is, ha ha ha, dealing with peoples DRAMA!

Well we were able to find this one African Family this week with a dad and 2 Sons and it was awesome he has been talking to the missionaries on mormon.org and talking with them and so we randomly show up at his door and then he tells us "hey did the church send you?" and we were like um no we are just knocking around!! and he was like well that's funny I was just talking to missionaries online... so he invited us in and we taught the 1st lesson to him and his sons!!  But dang it was awesome to teach them!!!  They are so elect its crazy.  But they came to church this Sunday and it turns out that they know a bunch of people in the ward already, and now he just wants to learn more and more!!!

Well today we just got done Golfing with a member which was awesome!!!  It is nice to go out and have some fun once in a while!!  But its nice to get back to work too!!!  So ya it was nice talking to you all I hope you have an awesome week just remember that The Church is true and to Keep Smiling!!!

Don't know if you can read this but one night we got an extreme tornado alert, my companion was extremely scared so we spent the night in the bathroom, half of which we were in the bathtub under my mattress, haha, turns out the storm wasn't that bad but she was real concerned!

Elder M. Russell Ballard is a hero.

Hey everyone!
This week has been wonderfully exhausting and great.  I just have to say, we've been studying some talks from M. Russell Ballard lately and I really am just inspired by him to say the least, he has been an answer to my prayers multiple times the last few days, did you all get the chance to watch the CES devotional last night?  It was remarkable.  The general authorities have a special place in my heart, they're so devoted and diligent and inspiring, they make me want to be better.
As for our week and the people we are working with, we had a great experience this week with one of our investigators, she's a single lady in her 30's we found her trying to contact someone else but then she wanted to read the Book of Mormon, which doesn't happen that often so it was pretty amazing.  She has been reading it and meeting with us.  She came to the baptism on Saturday for the missionaries in the other ward and loved it!  She wants to know it's true and she is working on receiving an answer to the prayers.  She has had a really rough life and to top it all off, her Grandpa, who is the closest thing she has to a Dad, passed away a couple nights ago, luckily the plan of salvation helps us understand that this life isn't all, and she has gained strength through it, the Lord led us to her and it has been an adventure! I love her so much.
I have learned a lot this week about being a dedicated, obedient, powerful instrument in the hands of the Lord.  We all know the way we gain the power of God is through being obedient to his commandments.  I had never thought that maybe promptings we receive through the Holy Ghost to change our lives and become better were specific personalized commandments for us.  I went on an exchange with this incredible Sister who actually got brought into our mission from the boundary change from the North Carolina Charlotte mission.  She shared with me her experiences from her first six months there.  It was apparent that she had a testimony of exact obedience, that includes following the promptings of the spirit.  There are good things we can do with our time, there are better things we can do with our time, and then there are the best things we can do with our time, we need to seek out the best things and those things always end up being the specific promptings of the spirit we receive in our lives.  There are many things on my mission that I have learned but perhaps one of the most important to me is that God's timing is PERFECT.  It is never wrong, or delayed or early.  He knows exactly what I need when I need it.  He knows exactly what you need when you need it.  He knows exactly what those that we serve need and when they need it.  This week has given me renewed courage to follow the promptings of the spirit courageously and without question.  I'm reminded of a quote by President Thomas S. Monson "Courage, not compromise, brings the smile of God's approval."  So we stick out like sore thumbs sometimes, we're called a "peculiar" people.  I would say that that is the privilege we have as disciples of Jesus Christ to stand up for what is right.  It is the small and seemingly simple and insignificant things we need to change in our lives that will make the biggest difference, line upon line, precept upon precept, the more we follow those promptings, the more He can trust us, and the happier we will be.
"Great and marvelous events seem to motivate us, but small things often do not hold our attention...Is our journey sometimes impeded when we forget the importance of small things? Do we realize that small events and choices determine the direction of our lives just as small helms determine the direction of great ships?" -Elder M. Russell Ballard.
I love you all, thank you for everything you do and the examples you've been to me throughout my life.  My mission means the world to me, I will be forever grateful for this opportunity to serve.  Again sorry for so many words!
Love,
Sister Burningham.

This is my companion buying us ice cream, it's the best in town!  Seriously we love it.

This is a cat we found with a red shirt on, not quite sure how that happened, but he was a nice cat, haha we got
the biggest kick out of this!!  HaHa

Elder Riley Harris

I just wanted to share with you that Riley is doing well on his mission and he has had quite an exciting week.  As you may or may not remember, he is serving in the Tupelo Mississippi area.  I am sure you have heard that name this week since it was hit hard by a very large tornado.  He was right in the middle of it.  Needless to say, we were on pins and needles waiting to hear if he was okay.  Thankfully, he came out of it, with 44 other missionaries, unscathed.

Today, while at work, one of my nurse co-workers received a phone call from Sister Hanks - the mission president's wife of Riley's mission and this is what she said happened that day:

I talked to Sis. Hanks, Mission President's Wife (MPW) in Birmingham, ALA Mission. She and President Hanks were with the missionaries at a quarterly activity washing and waxing all of the mission vehicles in the parking lot of a stake center in Tupelo, Mississippi. They were eating pizza, playing games etc. Their phones starting going off and they knew something was up. Sooner than later the sky started to go green per her report. They gathered all of the missionaries (44 total) and went into the middle of the building in the chapel. They were somewhat scared and decided to say a prayer. It was suggested that they sing hymns and so they began to do so. Tupelo is the birthplace of Elvis Presley. There is an Elder in the mission that loves music and wants to be a rock starJ Anyway, he ended up at the piano and they played songs such as “Master, the Tempest is Raging” and others that made them smile and less scared. There was a sense of excitement as they sang the hymns with respect, but an upbeat tempo and joy that was filled the room. They felt “a strength in numbers” and were later informed that the place they stayed the night before (Mission President and his wife) was totally destroyed. The devastation was within a mile of the chapel. They were without power and continued singing in the dark until they were informed by phone that they needed to evacuate the area and go west. There was a 3-hour window of opportunity to leave the area before the next tornado was likely to hit the area. No missionary was injured. Everybody left the building uplifted in the face of devastation and destruction.

I sure enjoyed hearing this from the mouth of the Mission President's Wife!

As you can see, we have a lot to be grateful for.  He was kept safe in a church building while everything else around him was destroyed.  I have attached a picture that we received yesterday of him in his Helping Hands t-shirt that became well known after Hurricane Sandy. His mission will be one of service now.  I am proud of him and so grateful that he and the other missionaries were kept safe during this time.  I am so grateful that he chose to go on a mission and to serve the Lord.  As much as I can't wait to see him again, I am glad he has had this time to grow and to touch other people in the States of Alabama and Mississippi.  He has touched my life in so many ways too.

Sister Tracy Harris (mother of Elder Riley Harris)

Elder Brandon Wallis

Between moving, transfers, and General Conference it was a pretty slow week, but we were able to set up a lot of stuff for this next week! We're keeping our fingers crossed that we can get some more people on date for Baptism. We have 7 that we could potentially get on date, that have either had a date before and need to reset it, or have progressed enough to where we can extend an invite. Open with prayer, spiritual thought, TESTIFY AND INVITE THE SPIRIT!, then INVITE THEM TO BE BAPTIZED while the spirit is really strong. Works more often than not. Getting them to progress and keep commitments is where people tend to struggle. We did commit Jennifer (the Wilson's daughter who's 28) to come to church this Sunday! We have some members that are going to pick her up. May Wilson (the mother) said she would come the following week. Mike Wilson... we have to figure out his work schedule. He has a testimony, he has to act on it though and ask for Sundays off. Keep your arms crossed and heads bowed praying that it'll work out! There's a few other investigators that we're starting to be able to meet with again, they've become more receptive and willing to have us over again. That's been pretty cool. The Scotts are a returning to activity family and we're teaching 3 of their daughters. Ages 8 and two are 9. They are on date for the 26th of this month! They seem pretty solid, two of them have some autism, and the lessons can be pretty interesting and hard to keep their attention. But they are learning and want to be Baptized. They also committed to come to church on Sunday. Janice Rivera is a less active that we teach and she's been doing pretty well. She really struggles with the spiritual side of the Gospel. She tries to live the Gospel but has a hard time believing that it comes from God. BUT she knows that it's a good thing. She has two twin sons that are 7 years old. They're awesome. We teach them as well and they've been absorbing a lot of it. They come to Church pretty much every Sunday now. Jonathan and Justin have asked if I'd Baptize them! I was so touched. I can't remember when their b-days are, hopefully I'm still in this area!!! Other than that, not a whole lot else has happened. We have several people that we're hoping to pick up as official "new investigators" this week. We've talked to them before and have their info. We'll see how it goes.
General Conference was the BOMB!!! I've loved every General Conference on my Mission. can you believe that I only have one more??? That blew my mind. In a way I'm kind of sad. Dad you're right, something about being on a mission and watching General Conference, you seem to get so much more out of it. A couple of my favorite parts were President Uchtdorf's talk on Gratitude, and President Packer's talk... his was a powerhouse! Did you catch his round about way of saying that he's seen the Savior? That gave me chills. President Uchtdorf gave me a lot to think about... Am I only grateful during times of happiness and ease? Or am I also grateful for the hard times that make me grow and mature? In hindsight I'm grateful for my trials because I learned from them and grew, but what about when I'm experiencing them? So I've been trying to change my attitude of picking when I'm grateful depending on my blessings, to having a attitude of gratitude, just like President Uchtdorf counseled. Right away I've been able to see a difference. Generally I'm more happy and I'm able to not only endure trials and temptations but enjoy almost relish the challenge because God knows what my limits are and will only give me tribulations that will help me. IF, I have the ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE. I know that we have modern day Prophets. There's no way that this Church could be false. There's too much good in it... it is PURE TRUTH. Like I've told some people on my Mission, why would I come out here for two years to tell people a lie? Why would 15 million people be so firm and steadfast in a lie? It is only through Jesus Christ that people are able to be this steadfast and immovable. Above all my other goals in life, my first priority is to be able to call myself confidently, a Man of God. The Gospel is where I have found the most joy in this life. So naturally, this is where I will stay. There is so much I have to learn, there's an infinite amount of knowledge if we use the Gift of the Holy Ghost. I love this Church, not because I think it's a good church or because of the people, I love this Church because it is Jesus Christ's Church. By continuing to progress in this Gospel and sharing our testimonies, we can all become truly converted to Christ. It is that point that I am striving to get to, where anything we do in this life is a conscious decision to do good and to bring us closer to Christ. This is my testimony and my witness of the Savior, that He lives, He loves us, and wants us to use His Atonement to return to our Heavenly Father. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

I love you all! I hope you enjoy the other pictures that I've been uploading! I hope you have an awesome week. Stay safe, stay healthy/get healthy.
Love,
Elder Wallis
